This week’s special guest is world-renowned author, sex educator and theatre artist Barbara Carrellas. Her pioneering book, Urban Tantra: Sacred Sexuality for the twenty-first century, has been mentioned a few times here on the LOVE SEX DESIRE Podcast series by several special guests.
I had the pleasure of reading it recently and I must say, as someone whose not pulled into the world of Tantra, Urban Tantra spiked my curiosity real good thanks to a killer prelude detailing Barbara’s night working at a lap dancing parlor in New York City back in the early 90s.
Here’s an excerpt.
“The kind of sex work I usually do is of the nurturing and healing variety – very yin. This place [Harmony Burlesque in NYC] is about as down and dirty, in your face – yang- as it gets. Plus, I simply love being Alexandra. She’s the archetypal opposite of Amara, my sensitive, New Age goddess persona. I also love the exercise. If I could have this much fun at a gym, I’d join one. I also enjoy hanging out in the back room with the other women, imagining that this is actually a modern temple of the sacred prostitite.”
Barbara began her career back in the 1980s during the AIDS crisis – a time when the connections between sex, spirit, and healing were at their most strained. These days she’s the Founder of the Urban Tantra Professional Training Program, the author of several books and the go-to expert giving lectures at Universities such as Harvard, Brown and Yale, and teaching Caitlyn Jenner and friends how to have gender-free orgasms on E! reality series I am Cait.
In this episode we discuss:
- the greatest challenges and delights of Barbara’s life since she first wrote the pioneering book, Urban Tantra
- the difference between deep pleasure and intense ecstasy
- power exchanges, consent, BDSM and tantra
- finding your voice in the bedroom and in relationship
- Barbara’s best advice for those in their 20s, 30s, 40s and beyond
